WINDHOEK: Anna Namakau Mutelo says her new appointment as the new Ambassador- Designate to Ethiopia is an indication of the commitment that President Hifikepunye Pohamba has for the advancement and empowerment of women.
Mutelo made the remarks at the occassion of her commissioning as Ambassador – Designate to the Federal Democratic Republic of Etiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa at State House on Monday.
¨I am honoured to have just attended the African Union (AU) Summit where Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma was elected as the first African woman chairperson and first diplomat from the Southern Africa Region, to lead our continental Organisation in 49 years of its existence,¨ Mutelo said.
She said her appointment as well as that of the Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma is a triumph for women not only in Southern Africa but for all women on the African continent and the world at large.
She pledged to take up her assignment with honour, dignity, commitment, loyalty and hard work and promised to represent the government and the people of Namibia to the best of her abilities.
¨My colleagues and I at the Embassy of Namibia in Addis Ababa understand the importance of teamwork. That it is only through teamwork, consultation and coordination that we can truly accomplish the noble goals and objectives assigned to us as diplomats,¨ Mutelo said.
She echoed the same sentiments as that of the president, that Ethiopia has great potential for trade and investment with Namibia adding that she will work hard to strengthen the bilateral relations and encourage trade and investment between the two countries.
Mutelo added that Africa is the richest continent endowed with many natural resources thus this should be used to improve the lives of the people of Africa.
¨I am therefore looking forward to working with my colleagues as well as international co orperating partners based in Addis Ababa to assist our governments in fighting poverty and ensuring economic development for our people,¨ she said.
Before commissioned as the new Ambassador -Designate to Ethiopia Mutelo who served the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for 21 years was also a counselor at the Namibian Mission to the United Nations In New York from 2012 to 2012.
