Ouagadougou Hosts Second University Football Championship with 22 Universities Participating


OUAGADOUGOU – The second edition of the University Football Championship (CDU) commenced on Sunday evening in Ouagadougou, featuring 22 universities.



According to Burkina Information Agency, who was present at the event, this year’s tournament focuses on the theme “Football, a factor of Social Cohesion for a United Faso against adversity.”



The president of the organizing committee, Cheick Omar Ilboudo, emphasized the significance of the theme, highlighting football’s potential to unite and foster a sense of national cohesion amidst Burkina Faso’s cultural diversity and ongoing challenges. Ilboudo pointed out that the sport’s unifying qualities are crucial in a time marked by security concerns.



Joseph Zagré, the sports sponsor, praised the commitment and talent of the young athletes, attributing his life’s important lessons to football, including teamwork and perseverance. Co-sponsor and former captain of the Stallions, Charles Kaboré, motivated the players to continue their efforts, underlining their role as the future pillars of the nation.



The championship, overseen by the Minister of Sports, Youth and Employment, Dr. Boubakar Savadogo, kicked off with the Institute of Electrical Engineering of Burkina Faso securing a 1-0 victory over the Ecole Supérieure de Commerce. The matches are scheduled for weekends at the City Stade at the ZAD.



Participants in this year’s CDU include a diverse array of institutions such as the University of African Unity, Higher University of Electrical Engineering of Burkina Faso, and Swiss UMEF University of Burkina Faso, among others. The organizers hope that the tournament will not only showcase sporting prowess but also strengthen community ties and promote values of tolerance and solidarity among the youth.
