Sierra Leone Backs Moroccan Autonomy Initiative for Sahara as Only ‘Credible and Realistic’ Solution

RABAT – The Republic of Sierra Leone has reiterated its support for the territorial integrity of Morocco, endorsing the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative as the sole ‘credible, serious, and realistic’ resolution to the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara. This endorsement came during a meeting in Rabat on Tuesday between Nasser Bourita, Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad, and his Sierra Leonean counterpart, Timothy Musa Kabba.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the Sierra Leonean foreign minister confirmed his country’s unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial claims. This support was further emphasized by Sierra Leone’s diplomatic engagements, including the opening of a Consulate General in Dakhla in August 2021 and participation in the Ministerial Conference in January 2021, which backed Morocco’s autonomy plan under the aegis of the Kingdom and the United States. The Sierra Leonean diplomat voiced full backing for the UN-led process aiming for a realistic, practical, and lasting solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue.
