OTJIWARONGO: The Otjozondjupa Regional Governor has urged Government Ministries and local authorities here to start planning for unforeseen disasters, and to establish a regional disaster risk management committee.
Samuel Nuuyoma was speaking at a disaster risk management consultative meeting held here with the region’s different heads of department on Friday, and called on those present to discuss the establishment of such a committee as no such body currently exists.
He said they should set aside a certain proportion of their budgets specifically for disaster risk reduction activities in the region.
The governor said his office is prepared to facilitate the establishment of a regional disaster risk management committee so that such a committee can co-ordinate all efforts made to deal with catastrophes in the region.
He said once such a committee is formed, it will work directly with the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) to see to it that natural or man-made phenomena which damage lives and property and which disturb the socio-economic stability of the region and its people, are dealt with properly.
