South Africa: Eight Heavily Armed Robbers Perish in Shoot Out in Joint Operation
Eight heavily armed suspects have been fatally wounded during a shootout with Durban Hawks, the police Special Task Force, Crime Intelligence and the Durban K9 unit members along the R617 in Howick.
Acting on information, the Hawks members with the assistance of the other police units attempted to stop a convoy of vehicles on Saturday evening loaded with suspects wanted for a police murder, ATM bombings and armed robberies. It is believed that the armed gang were allegedly on their way to blast ATM's in the Howick area when they were confronted.
The suspects ignored police warnings to stop and allegedly opened fire on the members resulting in a shootout and a high speed chase. Shortly after, both suspect vehicles came to a standstill and eight five suspects were fatally wounded and one was injured. The injured suspect was taken to hospital and is currently under police guard.
Three AK47assault rifles, one R5 rifle and two 9mm pistols and a bag of already primed commercial explosives were seized. Investigations are underway to profile all the suspects whilst all firearms recovered have been taken for ballistics testing. The remaining suspect will appear in court once he is discharged from the hospital.
