PRICES OF BASIC FOOD ITEMS IN SOUTH AFRICA RISE FURTHER

The cost of living in South Africa is on the rise with the prices of basic items which South Africans live on such maize and sugar having gone up.

According to Statistics South Africa, the prices of maize and sugar have increased with a five kilogrammes of maize costing 33.55 Rand (one US dollar = 14.28 Rand at current exchange rates) in 2014 increasing to 36.08 Rand in 2015.

The trend is continuing and the Stats SA Consumer Price Index for March revealing that South Africans paid an average of 9.8 per cent more for average household purchases this year than they did in 2015.

The report found that vegetables and fruit were both 18.7 per cent more expensive in March 2016 than they were in March 2015.

There has, however, been a price decline in food items such as vegetables such as onions, potatoes and cabbage.
