Harmony fatal accident: operations halted

Pretoria: Operations at the mine where eight miners died on duty have been halted until the area has been declared safe.

This comes after the mining industry was rocked by the tragic death of the miners at the Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited’s Doornkop Mine. Several other workers were critically injured following an underground accident at the mine on Tuesday.

Eight bodies were recovered by a mining rescue team on Wednesday, a further eight were rescued and treated for injuries, while one more miner has not been found.

Following a visit to the mine on Thursday, Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu said no miner will be allowed on site and in areas affected by the incident.

“The incident is a lesson for us all. The gold industry has over the past five years improved its health and safety standards tremendously, and for such an incident to occur is obviously a setback.

“As the regulator, we must look at what happened and learn from it to ensure we can, as far as possible, prevent it in future,” she said.

The mineworkers were trapped following a fall of ground incident that caused a fire.

Shabangu also sent her condolences to the families of the deceased miners.
