SOUTH AFRICAN PRESIDENT HAPPY OVER UNIT ACCORD REACHED BY KENYAN LEADERS

PRETORIA– South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is pleased that his Kenyan counterpart, President Uhuru Kenyatta, and Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga have agreed to a unity accord.

Their decision to put the country first is a good example of excellent leadership, says Ramaphosa.

Kenya’s economy had been derailed following a prolonged election period marred by violence and divisions.

Several people have lost their lives but the the sudden truce is getting the thumbs up from Ramaphosa, the current chair of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

This is good news. As chair of SADC, I am encouraged to see Africans solving their own problems, Ramaphosa said here Sunday.

Ramaphosa is no stranger to Kenyan politics. He had been involved in the peace process in that country after the violent 2008 elections but pulled out after Kenyatta accused him of not being an honest broker.

However, it seems like Ramaphosa and Kenyatta have mended their relationship. The Kenyan President visited South Africa recently and made an appearance at the anniversary celebrations o the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party in January.
