COSATU in the North West has been summoned by the communities of Braakspruit and Doornfontein Farms to intervene wherein farmers attempted to evict them. We addressed the community of Braakspruit Farm yesterday, 17th October 2016, which is 22 kilometres away from Klerksdorp and Ventersdorp. The communities raised the following issues:
1. The farmer has dug big holes surrounding the houses of the surrounding community claiming that he is preventing soil erosion. These holes are posing problems to children and the soil is very close to houses.
2. The Farmer denies them to use cemetery that they have previously been using. Some of the cemeteries are not covered as some are close to the road.
3. They have no water, electricity and toilets to use
Most of people who reside there had more than 30 years in that place and the new owner now wants to evict them using law enforcement to intimidate them. We have engaged all stake holders ,including Matlosana municipality to make sure that all workers must remain in that place and must get basic service like water, electricity and sanitation. There is another farm wherein the farmer is busy putting an electric fence across the yard of an elderly 78 years old, whose husband died working for the same farmer.
Cosatu would not fold its arms when our people are still oppressed and victimised by racist farmers. We are going to fight for the right of those community members. We invite media to come and expose these racism and oppression on farms, and on Friday, 10h00 , we will be visiting both farms with stakeholders.
