SIBBINDA: The ruling Swapo Party has overwhelmingly won the Sibbinda Constituency by-election held here yesterday.

Swapo candidate Ignatius Chunga garnered 1 467 votes, while the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP)’s Asser Malumbano got 801 votes and the Congress of Democrats (CoD)’s Alfred Chilinda 232 votes.

The DTA of Namibia’s Alex Mibonda received 121 votes.

The results were released by the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) at 02h00 this morning.

Less than 3 000 out of more than 6 000 eligible voters cast their votes at 16 polling stations of which five were mobile.

The by-election was declared free and fair by top ECN officials.

OTAVI; A variety of unexploded ordnance of South African origin were found hidden in shallow holes in the ground at Farm Broken Hills in the Otavi area on Thursday.

The Broken Hills farm is situated 14 kilomtres south-east of Otavi in the Otjozondjupa Region.

The farm was bought three years ago by the Organisation for the Empowerment of Widows/Widowers and Orphans due to HIV/AIDS in Namibia (OEWONA).

There are currently no orphans and/or vulnerable people on the farm, since it is under re-construction until January 2013, said Linus Kaluapa, the farm caretaker.

Kaluapa told Nampa yesterday that he found the unexploded devices when he was digging shallow holes near a water tap at the farm.

NamPol’s head of explosives, Deputy Commissioner John Alweendo told Nampa in an interview yesterday at the farm that the unexploded ordnances are old, and are of South African origin.
