Paris Saint-Germain set to coach the region's football-mad youngsters

AN international football academy run in partnership with one of Europe’s top clubs is set open its doors to the region’s sporty youngsters this Easter.

The Paris Saint-Germain Football Academy England launched with three training camps in the country last year.

They proved so successful the scheme has now been expanded and organisers have selected Barnard Castle School to be a venue from Monday, April 3 to Friday, April 7.

The course is open to boys and girls of any ability, who are aged between eight and 17. They will be able to complete the full week or just sign up for certain days.

Accord Language School, which runs summer schools, is working in partnership with Paris Saint-Germain to organise the event, which will see youngsters provided with a full kit, meals, progress reports, certificate and coaching from a top coach belonging to the French side.

Alex Harrap, of Accord Language School, said: “The club wanted to set up this academy exclusively in England and we have been working in partnership to help them do this.

“The events last year went really well so we have looked to expand it further. We are holding three sessions in the north and two in the south this year.

“The event in Barnard Castle is open to all. We are trying to make it as accessible as possible. We want to develop this within the community.”

“One of the Paris Saint-Germain coaches will be coming over and meeting with the kids and each day will be named after one of the club’s top players and the training will reflect this.

“It is about opening it up to people what football can do and how it can make a difference.”

The event is not specifically aimed at looking for the next big player, targeting a more inclusion approach.

Mr Harrap added: “There will be some skills tests so they get to train so we can see what level they are. This will mean they are put in the right group to get the best out of the training.”

The course costs £250 for the full week or £60-a-day.
