WINDHOEK: A couple just after getting married the day before woke up to a terrible shock on Sunday morning when the shack that they live in caught fire and burned down to ashes.
The fire also spread to four other neighbouring shacks leaving close to 18 people including children homeless.
The incident which happened at Okahandja Park informal settlement in Katutura, attracted a lot of onlookers and sympathisers particularly for thely weds.
In an interview with Nampa a very sad bridegroom Markus Hairua said he was the first person to have detected the fire around 5h00 in the morning but can not tell what could have been the cause.
¨ At this point in time I can really not tell what could have caused the fire because even in our bedroom we do not make use of candles,¨ Hairua said.
He said the event took a unpredictable twist as on Saturday they were celebrating their union as a couple and did not expect to be homeless the following day.
Hairua said they could only save themselves and their two children adding that by the time he detected it, it was too late to also save some of their house hold things.
¨ Furniture and as well as entertainment equipment we hired just to used during the wedding celebration also burned to ashes. We are now left with nothing,¨ Hairua sadly explained.
His bride on the other hand who was still dressed in her wedding outfit was just speechless and appeared to be very sad and heartbroken.
The couple lost 17 plastic chairs, four big tables, four sofars a keyboard and two speakers which were all hired stuff just for the wedding celebrations.
As their personal belongings they lost a double bed, washing basins, identity documents, clothes, blankets and some of their visitors and guests belongings such as clothing and bags was also lost in the fire.
Meanwhile the couple as well as the rest of all the other affected families are calling on businesses, government and good samaritans to help them with the basic necessities as they do not have food, blankets as well as clothing apart from what they have on.
The fire brigade arrived at around the 6h00 in the morning to put the fire out.

It is not know what caused the fire which spread to four other neighbouring shacks, leaving close to 18 people including children, homeless.
The incident attracted a lot of onlookers and sympathisers, who were particularly concerned about the Hairuas who tied the knot on Saturday.
Speaking to Nampa Sunday morning, Markus Hairua said he was the first person to detect the fire at around 05h00.
“At this point in time I really cannot say what could have caused the fire because even in our bedroom we do not make use of candles,” Hairua said.
He said by the time he noticed that a fire had broken out in their shack it was too late to grab any of their household belongings, and the couple only managed to save themselves and their two children.
The Windhoek fire brigade arrived at the scene at around 06h00 and managed to extinguish the fire.
“Our furniture and the entertainment equipment we hired to use during the wedding celebration also burned to ashes. We are now left with nothing,” a sad Hairua said.
When Nampa was at the scene, his visibly shocked bride Faustina Kandonda was still dressed in her wedding outfit.
The couple lost plastic chairs, four big tables, four sofas, a keyboard and two speakers which were hired for the wedding.
Some of the personal belongings they lost include a double bed, Identity Documents (IDs), clothes, and blankets, while their guests’ also lost items such as clothing and bags in the fire.
