WINDHOEK: The body of a week-old baby girl was found wrapped in a plastic bag inside a riverbed close to Soweto Market in Katutura yesterday afternoon.
A man by the name of Gotlieb Dryer recounted that he had been relieving himself in the riverbed at around 15h00 when he saw the baby and immediately alerted the police.
City Police spokesperson Helena Mootseng told the media on the scene that what is really concerning is that despite the pleas by the City and Namibian Police, since last year she has visited 10 different sites where 10 babies have been dumped.
She said they have been pleading with the public to assist the police in curbing the crime, adding that if anyone knows of someone that was pregnant and is suddenly not pregnant any more, they should inform the police in order to make people realise that such acts cannot be tolerated.
Mootseng pointed out that there are many ways in which to deal with the issue of baby-dumping, saying community members, community policing members, and councillors should also take it upon themselves to stop such crimes from happening.
