The High Representative/Vice-President is aware of the report on the human rights situation in South-East Turkey issued in February 2017 by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
The EU has repeatedly stressed that Turkey is expected to observe the highest standards in respecting the rule of law and fundamental rights, in line with its international commitments and status as a candidate country. Conclusions and recommendations by the Council of Europe provide an important basis for the Commission’s assessments of the human rights situation in Turkey.
The European Union is concerned about the ongoing violence in the South East of the country and firmly believes that a credible political process should be launched to achieve a peaceful and sustainable solution. The European Union is prepared to support this process.
