ALGERIAN FM SAYS RESOLUTION OF CONFLICTS IN AFRICA VITAL FOR CONTINENT’S SECURITY

ABIDJAN, Algerian Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel has called for the resolution of conflicts in Africa through peaceful solutions from stakeholders in order to overcome the resulting security challenges faced by African countries.

“Terrorism and related scourges, like organized crime and migration, are mainly due to the continuing crises and conflicts in Africa,” said Messahel in his address at a meeting here Tuesday of foreign ministers from Africa and the European Union to prepare for the African Union-European Union (AU-EU) Summit, to be held here on Wednesday and Thursday.

He added that these crises required joint efforts to promote political solutions, based on respect for the integrity and unity of countries in crisis. “The scourges of terrorism and migration take advantage of the chaos and the absence of the State to expand and regenerate,” said Messahel.

In this regard, he stressed the need to strengthen and rebuild State institutions of some countries in crisis in order to address such challenges.

As for counter-terrorism, Messahel added that Algeria would present a memorandum from President Abdelaziz Bouteflika on the African strategy for fight against terrorism and violent extremism as the AU Co-ordinator on this issue. He also underlined the connection between terrorism and organized crime and the need for a comprehensive approach to address this aspect.

Messahel stressed the necessity for greater co-ordination and co-operation between the AU and the EU in the field with a view to effectively combating terrorism, violent extremism and organized crime.
