Karen Murphy’s triumph in the women’s singles at the World Championships in Christchurch confirmed her status as an international legend of the sport.

The Shellharbour superstar beat Scotland’s Lesley Doig in the final to become Australia’s first male or female bowler to win back-to-back world titles after claiming the singles in Adelaide in 2012.

Murphy and another Illawarra/South Coast  legend Merle Richardson (1985) are the only Australians to win the women’s crown in singles at the world championships.

Murphy was all class in her post match speech: praising her final’s opponent, the event organisers and her Australian teammates, but the emotion of the victory was obvious with a few tears shed during the national anthem.

The region is lucky to have so many champions in a range of sports, but Karen Murphy – who I first interviewed more than 20 years ago – is a true South Coast sporting legend.
