Close to US$500 million has been pledged by international donors to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to help almost 43 million displaced or stateless people around the world in 2015.
The Geneva-based agency presented its largest ever budget at its annual pledging conference at the beginning of the year to deal with emergencies in the Middle East and Africa.
It said that Tuesday’s pledges were not sufficient to cover all needs.
But it added, they are important as they would allow the agency to plan and continue operations without interruption.
The head of UNHCR, António Guterres thanked the donors for their strong support but warned that the gap between needs and available humanitarian funding was widening.
