South Africa: Two Firearms Recovered in a Matter of Hours
Ladysmith K9, Newcastle Public Order Police and Pietermaritzburg Tactical Response Team arrested two men aged 20 and 25 in the Steadville area, Ladysmith. The men were wanted in connection with a murder case where Andisiwe Gcova (21) was stabbed to death in the proximity of the Steadville hostel on 29 October 2016. One of the men was found in possession of a pistol at the time.
He has been charged for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm. The suspects are due to appear in the Ladysmith Magistrates' Court later this week. The same group of officers acted on an intelligence driven information that they had received when they arrested a 52-year-old man in the Colenso CBD. The man was found in possession of an unlicensed 7.65 calibre pistol and ammunition. The suspect is due to appear in the Colenso Magistrates' Court today. Both recovered firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing to see if they have been used in any other criminal activities.
The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa praised the team for the recovery of the unlicensed firearms and the arrests of the suspects."We are warning those who intend to break the law in our province to think twice because we will work tirelessly and put them behind the bars. I also plea with the community to urgently contact our law enforcements if they see suspicious people committing criminal activities," said Langa.
