GHANA HAS A MATURE E-COMMERCE ECONOMY—PROF. QUAYNOR
Ghana has a mature e-Commerce economy, Prof. Nii Narku Quaynor, a scientist and software engineer, has stated, while stressing the need for all stakeholders to intensify their engagement and collaboration for the industry to become a thriving resource for the country.
Prof. Quaynor, Chairman of GhanaDotCom, who is described as the African Father of the Internet, noted that with one of the impediments— electronic payments (the Ghana Interbank Payments Settlement System and bank cards, NITA payments platform for payments for government services and Mobile Money) — being removed, the e-Commerce market and industry needed to overcome one other impediment— Logistics and Delivery— to grow.
He, however, expressed concern about cybercrime and related cyber security which, he said, had been identified as a significant threat to the adoption of e-commerce and stressed the need for all stakeholders to collaborate with the security agencies and companies to make cyber a safer place for e-commerce, adding that the development of a code of conduct should be the first step to guide the development.
He was delivering the key note address at the opening of the 3rd Ghana e-Commerce Conference and Exhibition 2016 — a platform for online businesses and businesses that want to trade safely on the internet— in Accra, yesterday.
Welcoming participants to the event, Mr Paul Asinor, Director, Occupational Management Limited (OML) Africa, noted that the mobile finance industry was an aspect of e-Commerce and urged Ghanaians not to see e-Commerce as a distant phenomenon.
Mr Asinor predicted that the majority of future purchases would be dominated by connected devices that would provide seamless transactions through the anticipation of customers’ needs, purchasing products for them and saving them time, thereby.
He disclosed that plans were far advanced for the formation of the Ghana e-Commerce Association to mobilize all stakeholders in the industry to make e-Commerce a driving force of Ghana’s economic growth through advocacy, regulation, safety and standards.
The first Ghana e-Commerce Expo took place in August 2013 on the theme: “Building Ghana’s Businesses Online” while the second was organized in November 2015 on the theme: ‘Unleashing Ghana’s Online Potential’.
E-Commerce Expo 2016 is being organized by OML Africa, an international Human Resource (HR) Management Consultancy based in Ghana with specialization in Organizational Development, Generalist HR, Talent Management and Advisory and Legal services.
Over 100 delegates are attending the two-day Expo on theme: ‘Transforming Ghana’s online Businesses through Technology, Innovation & Opportunity’.
Participants include companies and professionals from online retail shops, telecommunication companies, banks and internet service providers, software designers, solution providers in the mobile commerce, online payment and Information Technology (IT) security.
They will be addressed by leading experts in e-commerce, fintech, mobile and online banking, social media for business, digital advertising and cyber security, among others.
Some of the broad thematic areas to be discussed are ‘Transforming Ghana’s Online Businesses through Technology, Innovation and Opportunity’; ‘The Growing Impact of Cyber Crime and Commerce’; ‘The Power of Financial Inclusion (Banks, FinTech, Mobile-What’s Going On?’); and ‘The Marketplace and Online Retail: Striking the Balance (panel discussion).
The others are ‘Gaining Competitive Advantage with Social Media’; ‘Effective Approach to Digital Advertising’; and ‘Connecting Smallholders to Digital Financial Services’.
