A 20-year-old woman appeared in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court today on charges of kidnapping a newborn baby from the Rundu State Hospital over the weekend.
Annastacia Mantjodi Sitangwa allegedly went into the Rundu State Hospital on Saturday, and snatched another woman’s newborn baby.
She then took the baby to her home at Ngone village, situated some 30 kilometres east of Rundu.
The accused was arrested later that day, and the baby was returned to her mother, Agnes Hamutenya on the same day.
Sitangwa, who faces a charge of kidnapping, claimed that she took the baby by mistake as she apparently also gave birth on Saturday, and thought it was her baby.
Rundu Magistrate Hellen Olaiya did not ask her to plead during her brief appearance, and adjourned the case to 20 December this year to enable the court to obtain the services of an interpreter as the accused claims to only understand Nyemba.
