WINDHOEK: The driver of a heavy transport truck narrowly escaped death after his vehicle rammed into an abandoned vehicle on the B1 road, about 10km north of Windhoek in the early morning hours of Sunday.
According to the driver, Elias Nashinona from Wesbank Transport, he was on his way from Walvis Bay to Windhoek when he crashed into the 4×4 off-road vehicle left on a curve in the road at about 05h00.
According to eyewitnesses, the abandoned vehicle, with United Kingdom registration plates, was parked left of the Yellow line traffic sign on the road surface without any warning signs to alert oncoming motorists.
Nashinona told Nampa on Sunday that the accident was unavoidable, because he saw the vehicle too late.
The impact caused the truck to land on its side, sliding almost 80 meters before it came to a standstill in the bush.
The driver of the import vehicle was nowhere to be found. According to a police officer at the scene, the vehicle possibly developed mechanical problems during the night, resulting in the driver leaving it on the side of the road. The truck was damaged beyond repair, and the loss is estimated at around half a million dollars.
