Police are investigating an incident related to taxi violence where a victim was assaulted and the suspects attempted to rob him of his firearm at about 08:00 in the morning at R55 in Olifantsfontein. No one has been arrested and there is a possibility that the victim will be able to identify the suspects who attacked him.
It is alleged that the victim who is a marshal for ARMSTA (taxi association) was driving a sedan when he was attacked. The suspects confronted him in the vehicle and tried to disarm him. In the process he was assaulted and sustained injuries on the face and hand. Police responded to the scene and the suspects fled the scene into a group of other taxi operators at the rank. There is a possibility that the suspects are known to the victim. Police will be taking further statement from the victim to identify the suspects.
This incident follows other two incidents this week. The first incident happened at Woodmead where several shots were fired to a minbus that was parked on the side of the road by a group of vehicles that were travelling in a convoy. No one was inside the vehicle and it was damaged. A case of malicious damage to property is being investigated. The second incident happened yesterday afternoon at the Randburg taxi rank where a minibus was also attacked with stones and two people sustained minor injuries. A case of assault and malicious damage to property is being investigated. In both incidents, no one has been arrested.
Police are investigating a possibility that these incidents may be related and further investigation is continuing to identify the perpetrators. Several routes that are being affected are being monitored. Metro police are also having an operation to enforce the traffic laws on these routes and several vehicles have been impounded.
