SOUTH AFRICA: PROSECUTORS DENY LEAK IN PISTORIUS MURDER CASE

CAPE TOWN, Feb 22- South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has denied leaking documents on paralympian Oscar Pistorius who goes on trial for murder in just two weeks.

NPA spokesperson Medupi Simasiku, was adamant that key evidence published in the media “was not leaked by us”.

This was after television channel, eNCA, reported that the prosecution would rely on 13 key facts to prove that the paralympian was guilty of killing his model girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, at his luxury Pretoria home on Valentine’s Day last year.

eNCA said statements from neighbours, forensic analysis of the scene, the post-mortem report, and ballistic tests of the toilet door and firearm formed part of the State’s case.

In a significant about-turn, prosecutors are now conceding that Pistorius may not have had his prostheses on when he fired the fatal shots through a bathroom door.

eNCA reported that the state’s own ballistics expert believes the suspect was “most likely” on his stumps when the killing took place.

In other developments, the North Gauteng High Court will rule whether the media will be permitted to broadcast the trial live. Multichoice, The Oscar Pistorius Trial Channel, which was set up specifically for the event, and Eyewitness News are seeking audio of the full trial to be broadcast, and the evidence of the experts, police witnesses, and any other witnesses to be televised.

According to the justice department, around 300 journalists are expected to cover the case which gets underway on March 3.
