JOHANNESBURG, The Democratic Alliance (DA), South Africa’s main opposition party, has welcomed the decision by National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete to schedule the debate on a Motion of No Confidence in President Jacob Zuma for debate for April 18.
The party’s Chief Whip, John Steehuisen, said Wednesday that the DA was pleased that the Speaker had acceded to their request to reconvene the House urgently to debate the motion.
Steenhuisen said the DA was calling on MPs from across the political spectrum to support the motion because they had taken an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution.
A number of other opposition parties, including the Economic Freedom Fighters, Freedom Front Plus, United Democratic Movement, Congress of the People, African Christian Democratic Party and Inkatha Freedom Party. have joined forces with the DA to support the motion.
