Participation of the President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, at the African Union-European Union Summit in Côte d’Ivoire (28-29 November)

Press Release

The President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, will be in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire for the fifth African Union-European Union summit tomorrow and Wednesday, in addition, to parliamentary level meetings with representatives of the Pan-African Parliament.

President Tajani will be received by the President of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire, Alassane Ouattara, and will also meet the President of the National Assembly, Guillaume Soro, before addressing a speech to the plenary.

Ahead of the visit, President Tajani stated:

“This summit must put the African continent securely at the top of our political agenda. The European Parliament has a central role in defining a new partnership with Africa. To this end, we are pursuing permanent dialogue with African leaders such as President Ouattara, who addressed the plenary in Strasbourg. Last week, at my initiative, we brought together political leaders, investors, experts and civil society representatives, from both Europe and Africa, for a high-level conference last week in Brussels in the run-up to this summit.

“I am convinced that the next EU budget should allocate at least €40bn towards an ambitious investment fund for Africa. The leverage effect could mobilise up to €500bn that would help the continent transition towards a sustainable industrial base, modern agriculture, improve access to water supplies, efficient infrastructure, renewable energy and digitalisation. Additional efforts are also essential in supporting good governance and rule of law, promoting the empowerment of women and education.

“We need a comprehensive “Marshall Plan” and I now expect strong commitment and support from member states on this strategy. Africa’s problems are also Europe’s.”

On the first day of his visit to Abidjan, President Tajani will visit a local cocoa processing plant. In a meeting with entrepreneurs, he will underline the importance of development and reinforcing the manufacturing industry of African countries in order to create jobs and upgrade skills for young people.
