SWAKOPMUND: A 38-year-old boilermaker lost his life when he fell from an elevated platform at the Trekkopje Mine on Wednesday. A report by the safety department at the Trekkopje Project, stated that a steel work crew was busy aligning the floor plates at an elevated platform on the Maxi screen building structure on Wednesday.
In a media statement availed to Nampa on Thursday by AREVA stated that Petrus Kashango a Namibian employed at the Cosira Group which is a contracting company of AREVA, lost his footing on the elevated platform and fell 24 metres to the ground and died on impact.
The statement continued to say that the Chief Inspector of Mines, Mathews Amunghete, arrived at the Trekkopje Mine located nearby Spitzkoppe and launched an official investigation Thursday morning.
Country Manager of AREVA, Hilifa Mbako, told Nampa on Thursday, that the company’s (AREVA) management expresses its heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased.
“We are giving our full cooperation to the Ministry of Mines and Energy who is investigating the accident,” he said.
The Cosira Group, was appointed a contractor for the construction of mechanical plate-work and piping at the Trekkopje Project since 2010.
An average of 1,800 contractors is working daily on site.
