City seeking houses for low-income earners

WINDHOEK: The City of Windhoek has committed to address the issue of lack of housing in inviting developers to preset what they can offer in terms of construction cost and construction models.

During the City council meeting here on Tuesday, Windhoek Mayor Elaine Trepper passed the motion on affordable housing proposal to designated areas identified to serve the low to ultra low income citizens in the capital.

Areas are Katutura, Wnahenda, Okuryangava, Goreangab, Hakahana, Havana, Khomasdal and Otjomuise.

According to the official City council document, the City Council has allocated land to the presenting companies to construct demo houses and lay down the general guidelines of such allocations.

These companies are Namibia Jin Rijiu Affordable Housing Project, Cheetah Capital Community Resettlement Project, Eumbo Letu Building Enterprises CC, Eco Beam Construction, Monte Christo Group of Companies, NamGreen Wood Enterprises cc, Megumbo Accommodation Experts (Pty) Ltd, Keystone Development Solutions and Ino Investment (Pty) Ltd.

The rest of the companies who did not yet presented their models on affordable housing will be accorded an opportunity at the later stage.

After the construction of all the proposed demo house, a technical and social-economic assessment be made with regard to the construction model and cons construction cost.

The building plans of the proposed demo houses will be scrutinised to ascertain that it underwrite the applicable municipal building and other general regulations, however ti deemed as a special project, thus be fast tracked.

The document said the construction of the demo houses will be finanalised within ninety days from the date of allocations.
