WINDHOEK: The basic salaries of Public Office-Bearers will increase by 15 per cent with effect from 01 April this year, and not by 31 per cent as recommended by the Public Office-Bearers’ (Remuneration and Benefits) Commission late last year.
President Hifikepunye Pohamba said here today that given the role, duties and functions of Public Office-Bearers; the financial means of the State; current principles and levels of remuneration obtaining in Namibia; the level of inflation; poverty and unemployment; the basic salaries of Public Office-Bearers will be increased by 15 per cent.
He emphasised the fact that in Namibia, public office-bearers are there to first and foremost serve the nation, stating that it is not a profession that one can join in order to become rich.
Pohamba said that at the same time, good governance requires that there should be a blend of grassroots-based public office-bearers and professionals.
All these categories should be fairly compensated for the job they are doing in order to make Namibia one of the winning nations on the African continent and the world, he noted.
