ADDIS ABABA, The 10th African Union Gender Pre-Summit (GPS), which will discuss the impact of corruption on gender equality and women’s empowerment, is set to kick off on Wednesday at the African Union (AU) headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Held under the theme Winning the Fight against Corruption: A Sustainable Path to Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Africa, the summit will bring together AU Ministers in charge of gender and women’s affairs, representatives of Regional Economic Communities (RECs), intergovernmental and civil society organisations as well as UN agencies.

According to the AU, the objectives of the 10th AU-GPS will include discussions on the impact of corruption on the achievements of gender equality and women’s empowerment. It will also propose concrete actions to accelerate the fight against gender-related issues, notably in the areas of corruption.

It will also define the strategic positioning of the AUC Directorate of Women, Gender and Development (WGDD), multi-stakeholder policy platforms within the context of the new AU Reforms and Gender Strategy and prepare for the celebrations of the 10th anniversary of the AU-GPS, the AU said.

The summit will focus on the AU’s gender multi-stakeholder policy platforms with a view to redefine them in accordance with the imperatives of Agenda 2063 and the proposals in the report of the AU Reforms by President Paul Kagame of Rwanda.

The AU expects the summit to come up with concrete strategies to accelerate the fight against corruption.

The summit will deliberate on the preparations for the celebrations of the 10th AU-GPS anniversary, which will take place in May 2018.
