Ahrens out of Olympics

WINDHOEK: Namibia’s only shottist in the 2012 London Olympic Games, Gaby Ahrens’s journey also came to an end on Saturday after ending last out of 22 competitors in the women’s trap shooting competition.

Ahrens, Namibia’s flag bearer during the opening ceremony, could only manage 59 points out of 75 in the qualifying round.

Her personal best is 68 out of 75.

The gold medal winner, Jessica Rossi from Italy, scored 99 points (75 in the qualifying round and 24 in the final), followed by Zuzana Stefecekova from Slovakia with 93 points (73 in the qualifying round and 20 in the final), and Delphine Reau from France also with 93 points (72 in the qualifying round and 21 in the final).

It was the Namibian’s second stint at the Olympic Games after the 2008 Beijing Olympics, during which she also ended last out of 20 competitors with 52 points.

Other Namibian athletes out of the 2012 Olympics are cyclist Dan Craven, and boxers Mejandjae Kasuto and Jonas Mathews.

Meanwhile, Namibian 400m sprinter, Tjipekapora Herunga will be in action at about 20h00 Saturday evening in the semi-finals. The final of the 400m race will take place on Sunday.

Namibian marathon athletes Beata Naigambo and Helaria Johannes will be in action on Sunday, while wrestler Sam Shilimela will be in action on Friday and mountain biker Marc Bassingthwaighte on Sunday, 12 August.
