CAPE TOWN– The organizers of South Africa’ Two Oceans Marathon have confirmed that a female runner died during the race, a 58-kilometre ultra marthon held here over the weekend.
The 43-year-old woman, whose identity was not disclosed, was participating in the half-marathon.
The runner, according to organizsers, began experiencing severe discomfort before collapsing on Southern Cross Drive.
Despite prompt and prolonged medical attention, the runner could not be resuscitated, Two Oceans organizers said in a statement.
Carol Vosloo, the general manager of the Two Oceans Marathon said: We would like to extend our sincerest condolences to her loved ones, and also thank her fellow club members who gave up their own finish time to remain with, and assist her.
The Two Oceans Marathon attracts some 20 000 participants who willingly take on 56 km of open road and challenging mountain climbs. An interesting feature of the route is that, as the name indicates, it passes both oceans surrounding the Cape Town shoreline — the Indian and Atlantic Oceans.
