NAIROBI: KENYA has once again reigned supreme at the World Indoor Championships in Sopot, Poland. Caleb Mwangangi Ndiku clinched the men’s 3 000 metre gold prize while Ethiopia’s Genzebe Dibaba won the women’s 3 000m crown in a competition traditionally dominated by Africans. Highly-rated Kenyan female athlete, Hellen Obiri, settled for a silver medal after she failed to outpace her Ethiopian counterpart to the gold medal.
In the men’s marathon race, Dejen Gebremeskel came third to claim the bronze medal while former Kenyan national-cum-American Bernard Lagat came second to settle for silver medal. In the female category, Obiri had tried to outpace the Ethiopian but faded in the last minutes as Dibaba turned on a sudden burst of speed to clinch the gold medal for Ethiopia. Normally, long distance races pitting Kenyans and Ethiopians are full of action and did not disappoint this weekend.
Such races are becoming an Ethiopian and Kenyan affair.
