ANC PUTTING FINAL TOUCHES TO JAN 8 STATEMENT
The National Executive Committee (NEC) of South Africa's ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), met Thursday to finalise the January 8 Statement, an annual "State-of-the-Party" address which will be delivered by the party president, President Jacob Zuma, at Orlando Stadium here this Sunday.
The Statement will give direction to party structures on what needs to be done in 2017 and this will be President Zuma's last January 8 statement as party president. The ANC will hold its elective conference at the end of the year.
The Statement is expected to touch on what the ANC will do to recapture lost ground suffered during the last local government elections held in August 2016. It will also look at economic challenges facing the country.
On the international front, it will touch on peace and security on the continent. Global challenges such as peace in the Middle East and the continued commitment to contribute to a peaceful world will also be discussed.
On Friday, senior leaders of the party will visit the five regions of Gauteng Province to mobilise support. Gauteng is the host province this year, but other provinces will also be attending the event
