Governor Ayacko Highlights Importance of Market Infrastructure for Local Business Growth

Migori – Governor Ochilo Ayacko has emphasized the critical role of market development in creating business opportunities at the county level. Speaking at the launch of the refurbished Kakrao market in Suna East Sub County, Governor Ayacko urged local residents to make the most of the facility, providing a basis for further redevelopment.

According to Kenya News Agency, the Kakrao market, a project initiated in 2018 by former Governor Okoth Obado, had been non-operational due to the lack of essential amenities like an ablution block, water, and electricity. Historically significant for local residents, the market, established in 1944, was a center for cattle trade and barter business. However, it lost its prominence in the 1970s and struggled to regain its former glory, overshadowed by emerging markets like Uriri and Stella along the Kisii-Migori road.

The recent refurbishment, including market stalls, an ablution block, and market offices, has revived hope among local traders. Governor Ayacko also inaugurated a cattle market and committed to refurbishing other markets across the county to improve the working environment for traders, thereby elevating the living standards of locals.

The Kakrao Market Management Committee and area residents have requested the municipal management to install floodlights for night-time trading and establish a slaughterhouse to enhance the cattle market business. Additionally, there is a proposal to relocate the Migori bus terminal to Kakrao market to ease congestion in Migori town.
