NFDK Distributes Equipment Worth Millions to Support Disabled Persons in Western Kenya

KAKAMEGA – The National Fund for the Disabled of Kenya (NFDK) has distributed equipment valued at over Sh7.5 million this year to support Persons With Disabilities (PWD) in Western Kenya.

According to Kenya News Agency, a member of the NFDK Board of Trustees, the distribution took place outside the regional commissioner’s office in Kakamega town. Ten institutions caring for PWDs received a total of Sh 2 million, with each institution getting Sh 200,000. Additionally, 45 individuals were given donations worth Sh1.5 million. Prof. Ojiambo expressed concerns over some caregivers hiding disabled individuals due to fear of stigmatization, thereby depriving them of opportunities to participate in income-generating activities. She emphasized that the equipment provided should empower caregivers to generate income to support the beneficiaries, even those with severe disabilities.

The Constitution’s principle of inclusivity was highlighted by Prof. Ojiambo as she criticized the unfair treatment that blocks certain society members from enjoying fundamental rights. She was joined by other trustees, including Major Marsden Madoka and former Kitui Senator David Musila, during the event. The fund, established on October 10, 1980, has been operational for 43 years and continues to empower many PWDs by responding to individual requests for rehabilitative equipment, mobility aids, and tools of trade.

Musila and Madoka encouraged the equipment recipients to use the items to improve their social wellbeing and advised against selling them. Musila further noted that disability should not be seen as an inability and urged caregivers to support government efforts to uplift the welfare of the disadvantaged.
