Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the International Holocaust Remembrance Day (Athens, 27.01.2022)

Today, January 27, on the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we honour, reflect upon and take action to preserve the memory of the victims of the Holocaust.

It is our duty to never forget what happened in Europe only eight decades ago. To ask ourselves “If This Is a Man”, as did Primo Levi, one of the first Holocaust survivors to write about the inhumane experience he suffered.

Nowadays, unfortunately, the memory of the Holocaust is fading. One in twenty Europeans has never heard of the Holocaust.

At the same time, new threats are emerging: hate speech, racism, discrimination, anti-Semitism, Holocaust denial.

It is our duty to put up a barrier against these threats; to place greater emphasis on education.

These are the main priorities of the Greek Presidency of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, which we will continue to promote.
