Algerian General Assumes Leadership of Sahel Military Cooperation Framework

Ouagadougou – Algerian Army General Saïd Chanegriha has been appointed as the new leader of the Joint Operational Committee of Chiefs of Staff (CEMOC), which includes Niger, Mali, Mauritania, and Algeria. This announcement was made by the Nigerien press agency following an extraordinary session in Algiers.

According to Burkina Information Agency, General Chanegriha, also the chief of staff of the Algerian army, takes over the rotating presidency of CEMOC from Brigadier General Moussa Salaou Barmou of Niger. In his new role, Chanegriha aims to revitalize this security cooperation framework in the Sahelo-Saharan sub-region, enhancing its visibility and effectiveness in combating terrorism.

General Chanegriha also emphasized Algeria’s commitment to fighting terrorism and coordinating efforts with CEMOC partners. The countries involved in CEMOC, namely Mali, Niger, and Mauritania, share a nearly 3,000 km border with Algeria and were part of the G-5 Sahel initiative, which Algeria was not a member of.
