Ethiopians Rally Behind National Dialogue Commission for Peace and Unity

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Ethiopians from various regions have expressed their support for the National Dialogue Commission, which aims to foster lasting peace and unity across the country. In interviews conducted by the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA), residents highlighted their approval of the commission’s inclusive and grassroots-oriented methods.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, the commission has completed the participant selection process in 10 regions and 2 city administrations, including Assosa, Dire Dawa, Adama, Hawasana, and Wolayta Sodo. The approach to ensure broad representation has reportedly been well received by the public. Dereje Gutema, a resident of Dire Dawa, commented on the significance of the commission’s bottom-up strategy in enhancing both inclusiveness and credibility.

Citizens like Dereje emphasized the collective responsibility in contributing to the dialogue’s success. Feysa Megersa, Vice Chairman of the Adama City Council of Elders, also underlined the importance of community involvement in the dialogue processes, which are seen as essential for resolving longstanding issues and achieving peace.

Bruk Balcha from Wolaita Sodo pointed out the commission’s critical role in sustaining national unity and peace, stressing the need for inclusive dialogue to address historical challenges. These sentiments are echoed by many across Ethiopia who view the National Dialogue as an opportunity to heal divisions and foster a more prosperous future.

The commission, consisting of eleven members, was established on February 23, 2022, and is poised to start regional dialogues shortly. It is also in the final stages of identifying participants in remaining areas, gearing up for comprehensive national discussions.
