UN Advocates for ‘African Solutions to African Problems’ in Partnership with AU


ADDIS ABABA — The United Nations, through its collaboration with the African Union (AU) and key regional organizations, is championing the approach of ‘African solutions for African problems,’ according to UN Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa, Hanna Tetteh. In an exclusive interview with the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) during the 37th AU summit in Addis Ababa, Tetteh highlighted the UN’s commitment to working closely with the African Union to address peace and security challenges on the continent.



According Ethiopian News Agency, The partnership, formalized in a 2017 agreement, outlines the collaborative efforts between the UN and AU in conducting joint consultations, assessments, and implementations. Tetteh stressed the importance of this partnership, particularly in addressing the continent’s security challenges, including the ongoing situation in Sudan. The aim is to prevent conflicts and avert humanitarian crises by promoting peace and stability through negotiation and support for maintaining peace post-negotiation.



The UN Special Envoy praised the AU summit for facilitating a platform for the UN to engage not only with the African Union Commission but also with other essential partners. Tetteh’s comments underscore the UN’s strategy of leveraging African-led initiatives and frameworks to solve problems unique to the continent, reflecting a broader commitment to fostering peace and security in Africa.
