Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis meets with the Russian Ambassador Andrey Maslov (2.6.2021)

Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, met today with the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Greece, Mr. Andrey Maslov, at the latter’s request.

During their meeting, which took place in a very friendly atmosphere, they exchanged views on the preparation for the planned visit of the Prime Minister Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis to Russia. In this context, they stressed the need to convene in Moscow the 13th Greek-Russian Joint Interministerial Committee, co-chaired, on the Greek side, by the Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs and on the Russian side, by the Minister of Transport Mr. Saveliev, as well as the relevant working groups.

In addition, there was a discussion of economic issues and the prospects of Russian investments in Greece.

Mr. Varvitsiotis raised the issue of the resumption of the Greek – Russian airline connectivity, emphasizing the great interest of travel agencies in both countries. He further stressed that Greece is one of the few countries that recognizes both Russian vaccination certificates and Russian vaccines for travel purposes.

In addition, the Alternate Minister raised again the issue of the repatriation of the Archives of the Greek Jewish Communities, which were stolen by the Nazis during World War II and are now kept in Russia.

Ambassador Maslov referred to the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Dendias’ recent visit to Russia, characterizing it as essential and effective to further promote relations between the two countries.
