Homabay County Enhances Youth Honey Production with Beehive Distribution

Homabay, Homabay County – The local government of Homabay County has taken a significant step towards bolstering youth involvement in honey production by distributing bee hives to four youth groups in Rachuonyo South Sub County. This initiative is part of the county’s efforts to increase agricultural capacities among young people in the region. Following up on last year’s distribution of 76 beehives, this round saw an addition of 24 bee hives allocated to the same groups.

According to Kenya News Agency, who presided over the distribution, each group received a varying number of hives. The Nyagunde and Imani youth groups were each granted 7 beehives, while Kanyowang and Wifoma groups received 5 bee hives each. The distribution event took place at the Livestock Office grounds in Kosele.

Omollo emphasized the importance of diversifying agricultural activities to enhance income, particularly through beekeeping. He encouraged the youth to utilize the beehives to augment their production and contribute to food security. It was revealed that in July, the youth were trained in various agricultural skills, including beekeeping, poultry farming, and control of parasites and diseases affecting poultry.

The Livestock Officer also addressed other youth groups and individuals involved in beekeeping, urging them to seek necessary training and assistance to improve their production and economic prospects. He assured those who received the beehives of continuous support and advised them to properly maintain their equipment as trained.

Omollo pledged that officials from the Livestock Department would conduct follow-up visits to monitor the progress of the youth’s farming activities and provide any required support services. This move is part of the government’s commitment to engaging youth in productive economic activities as a means of transforming their lives.
