South Africa: Two House Robbery and Murder Accused Sentenced

Two men accused of house robbery and murder at Ladysmith have recently been sentenced to a lengthy term of imprisonment by the High Courts of Pietermaritzburg and Madadeni, respectively. On 16 February 2015 at about 09:40 neighbours heard screams coming from the home of an elderly couple in Kandahar Avenue, Ladysmith. The neighbours alerted police and on arrival they discovered that the homeowners had been robbed and tied up. One of the homeowners, Satyaprakash Mangru (64) died in the incident from asphyxiation.

Police went on a manhunt for the suspects and on 3 March 2015 the suspects were arrested at Umbulwane area. Both accused were denied bail and remained in custody until their sentencing. Bongumusa Magasela (21) pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for robbery and 22 years imprisonment for murder. His brother, Mxolisi Magasela (22) was found guilty and sentenced was sentenced 5 years imprisonment for robbery, 5 years imprisonment for assault and life imprisonment for murder.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa expressed his appreciation to the Ladysmith Station detectives for their sterling investigative work that lead to securing these harsh sentences.
