Military-ousted Guinean president Alpha Conde to be prosecuted for murder

CONAKRY— Guinea’s public prosecutor has announced that ousted president Alpha Conde will be arraigned for murder and other crimes.

Among the other crimes are illegal detentions, abductions, torture, rape and kidnapping undertaken by security forces during mass protests in 2020.

Conde was ousted in September 2021 by the Colonel Mamdy Doumbouya-led junta, barely a year into his controversial third term in office.

A document from Guinea’s public prosecutor says he is among 27 former senior officials who are facing a long list of alleged crimes.

Dozens of people were shot and killed during protests against Conde’s third term bid as well as incidents that took place during a controversial referendum and the subsequent vote that Conde won by a landslide following an opposition boycott.

According to the prosecutor, the case was filed by FNDC – an umbrella group that spearheaded the protests.
