Kisumu County Commissioner Calls for Vigilance to Prevent Radicalization

KISUMU, Kenya — Kisumu County Commissioner Benson Leparmorijo has called on the residents of Kisumu to remain alert and proactive in preventing radicalization and indoctrination, particularly among the youth, to thwart the potential rise of terrorism.

According to Kenya News Agency, speaking at the opening of the National Committee against Violent Extremism forum in Kisumu, vigilance is crucial to combatting terrorism, which poses a threat to peace, security, and fundamental freedoms. He emphasized that while Kisumu thrives as a diverse and bustling economic center, the collective effort of its citizens is essential in maintaining a secure environment conducive to business and investment.

Leparmorijo highlighted the importance of community involvement in security, urging the public to report any suspicious activities that could indicate terrorist intentions. He pointed out the necessity of closely monitoring various groups and movements within the community, including local gangs and organizations that might be prone to radical influences.

In his address, the County Commissioner also touched upon the sensitive topic of religious institutions and their role in shaping beliefs and attitudes. He called for scrutiny of the messages conveyed within these spaces to prevent them from becoming hotbeds of extremist ideology.

Furthermore, Leparmorijo advised caution regarding employment opportunities in the Middle East, acknowledging that while many seek better prospects abroad, there is a risk of exploitation or involvement in illicit activities. He stressed the importance of thorough research and awareness regarding the nature of these overseas positions.

The significance of this advisory comes against a backdrop of increased activity at Kisumu’s immigration offices, with many young Kenyans applying for passports to work abroad. Leparmorijo’s remarks underline the need for community and individual responsibility in safeguarding the region against the threats of extremism and terrorism.

The forum in Kisumu was part of a broader initiative, with participation from national counter-terrorism experts, including Senior Liaison Officer Sangale Nchololoi from the National Counter Terrorism headquarters in Nairobi, underscoring the integrated approach to addressing these critical issues.
