Kericho Police Crack Down on Illegal Alcohol Production

KERICHO—In a decisive operation against illicit alcohol production, law enforcement agencies in Kericho have apprehended seven individuals and confiscated a significant quantity of illegal alcohol following a raid in the Pala area, situated at the Kericho-Kisumu county boundary.

According to Kenya News Agency, the intervention was triggered by a tip-off from local residents about suspicious activities at a secluded metal-clad structure. Joint forces from Nyando Sub-County (Kisumu) and Soin Police Station (Kericho) rapidly mobilized to the location, uncovering a substantial cache of unlawfully produced alcoholic beverages.

During the operation, authorities seized 2,740 bottles of alcohol, encompassing brands like Space Vodka, African Blend Vodka, and Best Patiala Brand, totaling 685 liters. Additionally, the site harbored counterfeit versions of various other brands and substances integral to illicit alcohol production, including ethanol and fake Kenya Revenue Authority excise duty stamps.

Kitiyo highlighted the operation’s significant impact on illegal trade, noting the recovery of materials like an alcohol meter and packaging supplies, indicative of a broader distribution network targeting areas beyond Kericho, including Nakuru and central Kenya. The apprehended suspects were reportedly in the process of establishing a packaging facility for these illegal products.

The confiscated items, deemed worth millions in illicit trade, will undergo further analysis to determine their exact street value and potential revenue loss in government excise duty, initially estimated at around 250,000 Kenyan Shillings.

The incident underscores the authorities’ commitment to dismantling illegal alcohol production networks, evidenced by the substantial number of bar closures in the region. The County Commissioner commended the public’s role in these efforts, emphasizing the importance of community vigilance and cooperation in combating such illegal activities.
