Kajiado Benefits from Innovative ATM Water Machine Initiative by NGO

KAJIADO—The Ewangan Child Development Programme has introduced an innovative, cost-effective ATM water machine in Kajiado, offering residents a new way to access clean drinking water affordably.

According to Kenya News Agency, this initiative aims to alleviate the community’s reliance on boreholes, water pans, or rivers, which have been the primary sources of water until now.

The program commenced with the installation of ATM water taps in schools across Narok and Kajiado counties, expanding later to broader community access. Masila emphasized the system’s efficiency, noting that a mere Sh. 5 credit on an ATM chip can dispense 20 liters of water, with the machine designed to enable unlimited water fetching without the common issues of queueing or spillage.

The ATM water dispensers have significantly simplified water collection, especially beneficial given the region’s history with waterborne diseases and drought-induced challenges. These machines provide a solution that not only reduces the physical burden on women and children, who typically bear the brunt of water scarcity, but also improves overall community health.

Moreover, Masila detailed the NGO’s efforts to enhance water safety further, distributing water treatment chloride to residents. This measure addresses the critical issue of contaminated water, particularly from unclean dam sources, ensuring that treated water meets health standards for consumption.

The introduction of ATM water technology in Kajiado marks a pivotal step towards sustainable water management and public health improvement, offering a model that could be replicated in similar environments facing water accessibility and quality challenges.
