Agoro Sare and Ngiya Girls Triumph at Inaugural Eliud Owalo Foundation Basketball Tournament in Kisumu

KISUMU – Agoro Sare High School emerged victorious at the inaugural Eliud Owalo Foundation Secondary Schools Basketball Tournament, claiming the boys’ title, while Ngiya Girls secured the girls’ championship in a competition that showcased the region’s emerging basketball talent this past weekend in Kisumu.

According to Kenya News Agency, Agoro Sare High School, representing Homa Bay County, defeated Nyanza basketball champions Anjiko Boys with a score of 55-29, marking a significant victory in the boys’ category. In a match for third place, Maseno School outplayed Nyanchwa Boys, securing a win with a score of 37-27, during the event held at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Grounds.

In the girls’ category, Ngiya Girls from Siaya County were declared the winners after they outscored Tuk Jowi Girls from Migori County by 65-38 points. The tournament, funded by the Eliud Owalo Foundation, drew participation from 26 teams across Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, and Nyamira Counties, involving a total of 390 players.

The victors received trophies, uniforms, and cash prizes, while each participating team was awarded Sh20,000 and Sh500 airtime for every player. Eliud Owalo, the Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communication, and the Digital Economy and patron of the foundation, stated that the event aims to discover and foster talent, reviving the region’s historical prominence in basketball.

With Nyanza having produced numerous notable basketball players, Owalo mentioned that the annual tournament will serve as a platform for identifying, nurturing, and supporting emerging talent to compete in top-tier leagues. Scouts from the Kenya Academy of Sports and the Kenya Basketball Federation have identified standout players from the tournament, who will form a team representing Nyanza in the national basketball league.

The basketball tournament follows a successful football event organized by the foundation in December of the previous year. Owalo emphasized the foundation’s commitment to expanding its support to other sports disciplines, aiming to scout and nurture talent broadly across the region.
