Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis’ statement upon arrival at the EU General Affairs Council (Brussels, 18.11.2022)

“We will once again present not only Turkey’s provocative conduct, but also the initiatives we are taking through the trilateral and multilateral formats to bring the Mediterranean countries closer to Europe”, underscored Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, upon his arrival at the EU General Affairs Council in Brussels today, noting that “it is important for us that the South-Eastern Mediterranean becomes a region of cooperation, and it is very important for Europe as well because it can draw critical energy resources from there”.

Referring, in particular, to the energy and inflationary crisis, Mr. Varvitsiotis emphasized that Europe has yet to find a way to deal with it and that is why, he stated, “we insist on the proposals tabled by the Greek Prime Minister, some of which have already been adopted by the Commission in its proposals to the Council”. “The other member states, particularly Germany, should also accept that the restriction of prices through a price cap, through a price corridor, will be able to defuse this great tension which is currently evident in the energy market”, the Alternate Minister concluded.
