Budget Committee Urges Treasury to Allocate Emergency Funds for Flood Victims

Kilifi, Kenya – The National Assembly Committee on Budget has called on the National Treasury to utilize unapproved budget funds to assist Kenyans affected by recent flooding across the country.

According to Kenya News Agency, the chairperson of the committee, during the unveiling of new classrooms at Ribe Primary and Junior Secondary School on Friday, there are legal provisions that allow for such financial adjustments in times of emergency. “In the case of emergencies, article 223 allows the National Treasury to utilize funds which have not been approved by Parliament to help Kenyans, as long as the funds do not exceed 10% of the budget,” Nyoro explained.

Nyoro reassured the public that the budget already includes allocations for emergencies, which could be utilized now to mitigate the effects of the floods. If these funds are insufficient, the Treasury has the authority to redirect additional resources to address the crisis. The Kiharu MP, alongside Rabai MP Anthony Kenga, mentioned that the government is already mobilizing relief efforts through the National Youth Service (NYS) to support those impacted by the floods.

“I want to assure the people of Kenya that as government we are doing everything possible to help all the affected people. The National Youth Service has been directed to offer relief services in different parts of the country,” Nyoro stated, committing to ongoing government support during the current rainy season.
