Federation of Kenya Employers Advocates for Infrastructure Improvement in Coast Region

Mombasa, Kenya – At the 63rd Annual General Meeting of the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) held at Nyali Reef Hotel, the need for enhanced infrastructure in the Coast region was a key topic. Jacqueline Mugo, Executive Director and CEO of the FKE, outlined the critical condition of infrastructure in Mombasa and its importance for connectivity to the northern and western parts of Kenya.

According to Kenya News Agency, the region’s infrastructure, especially the road networks that serve as vital conduits for the flow of goods and services, is in dire need of improvement. She emphasized that these routes are essential for the sustenance of businesses, industries, and communities across the region. Mugo pointed out the severe impact of deteriorating road conditions on traffic congestion, which leads to significant business losses and elevated vehicle maintenance costs.

During the meeting, Mugo recognized some progress in addressing infrastructure issues but noted that the achievements have not fully met the business community’s expectations. She called on authorities to prioritize infrastructure development and maintenance to mitigate these challenges and bolster economic activity in the region.

Mugo also commented on economic indicators, acknowledging a decrease in input and purchase prices in the first quarter, yet observing that these changes have not substantially eased the cost of doing business. She highlighted the positive impact of recent rainfall on agricultural production and noted increases in demand, production, and sales within the sector.

Furthermore, Mugo addressed the broader economic challenges, pointing to persistent unemployment as a continuing concern. She encouraged local employers to enhance the business environment by addressing regulatory barriers, improving access to credit and markets, and fostering conditions that support entrepreneurship and innovation. Such efforts, she argued, are essential for unlocking economic potential and translating growth into real improvements in quality of life for residents of the region.
